Description
*Vlaanderen* was a strongly nationalist weekly newspaper. In 1922, the newspaper was considered innovative as its articles contained a huge amount of information and its editors were linguistically strong. The newspaper leaned pro-Flemish, but set itself apart from the ideas of the party Het Vlaamsch Front. *Vlaanderen* stood for an independent Flanders within a Greater Netherlands state. Love for the homeland and for the Flemish people was expressed in the motto "Leve God en Vlaanderland". The articles were often about a centralist unitary state, rejecting Belgian federalism. Moreover, there were pleas for unconditional amnesty in *Vlaanderen*, which went hand-in-hand with anti-repression articles. The newspaper's financier decided to invest in [*De Westvlaming*](https://anet.be/record/opacbnc/c:bnc:191/E), which led to the public losing interest in *Vlaanderen*. Readers found the newspaper's anti-Belgicism too radical, and its circulation declined further. Only a merger with another newspaper, *Jong Dietschland*, could save *Vlaanderen*.
