Title
De Demer: nieuwsblad voor het arrondissement Hasselt en de provincie Limburg
Description
*De Demer* was a liberal newspaper published in Hasselt by Winand Klock. With its liberal perspective, *De Demer* positioned itself against its Catholic counterpart, [*De Onafhankelijke*](https://anet.be/record/opacbnc/c:bnc:297/E). During the elections in 1884 and 1887, *De Demer* took the lead as a propaganda paper of the liberal party and ensured that the Liberals could narrowly maintain their majority against the Catholics. In 1890, the newspaper’s campaigning helped the Liberals to a clear victory. Opposed to this liberal viewpoint, the major Catholic institutions and schools stopped giving their print materials to Klock and did not offer him financial support, which led to his bankruptcy.
